Ava DuVernay was born on August 24 1972 on the 24th of August 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay learned to love art from her aunt Denise. Aunt Denise was a nurse, who did night shifts to ensure that she could devote her day to literature, theatre, and art. DuVernay was first introduced to the film West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay discovered through her example that art can be a vehicle for activism. DuVernay was raised by an aunt who was aware of her social circle and taught her to make use of the arts as a means of expression. DuVernay was brought up in Compton by her parents, however she was able to spend the summers in Lowndes County Alabama. This is the place where her father's family has been for generations. DuVernay's father recalled watching the historical Civil Rights march through the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the nearby town of Selma Alabama. DuVernay was influenced by her time in Selma, and later directed a documentary about the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay received her graduation certificate from Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. She went to the University of California Los Angeles for a degree in English and African American Studies. DuVernay began to develop an interest in broadcast journalism as a student. She began her career as an intern for CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was appointed to monitor and investigate the residence of a particular member of the Jury. As a result of her work, she became dissatisfied with journalistic work and entered the public relations industry. DuVernay began her professional career as a junior public relations assistant for a film studio that was small, right after graduating from the college. Her first venture was The DuVernay Agency, her public relations firm in 1999. The agency was the first to launch a variety of lifestyle and promotion networks, including Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
